The story was it came flopping and croaking out of a hole dynamited in some rock to make room for a railway. The men shot it and then put it up against the hut where they ate and rested and stood showing off with it, carrying the weapons they used to carry out the deed. It seemed to be stretched out, it's wings were unnaturally expanded. I remember showing my now late Dad and him drily commenting what marvellous things they can do these days with camera trickery. It's an odd do, people remembering things that never were! The black-and-white photo I remember showed a large but typical-size bird (in terms of body bulk and head) with an unusually wide wingspan, stretched out and nailed against a barn, with 4 or 5 'cowboys' standing in front of it with their arms out-streteched, touching fingertip to fingertip, to give an idea of the bird's wingspan. Because the wingspan looked SO out of proportion with the bird's body and head, I came to my own conclusion that the 'cowboys' had faked this photo... they'd stretched out the wings of a large but normal bird THEN (cleverly?) attached ANOTHER bird's wings on either end, with 'cowboys' strategically placed in the photo to cover up where the second pair of wings were joined to the dead bird's wings. The photo is VIVID in my mind and I can sketch it today from memory - none of the other pics that sometimes appear on the internet claiming to be this original photo even come close. I remember mentioning the photo to a few friends and other crypto fans once in a while during the 1980s and 1990s... long before there was talk of whether or not the photo even existed. Such a weird 'mystery within a mystery' - still, am confident that if someone researches the titles of cryptozoology / monster books that were published and sold in the U.S. from 1984 - 1989, and could look through each and every one of them, the photo would show up in at least one of them. Happy hunting :-)Lancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944722859697652991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-27654988473228165522020-05-09T10:36:53.440+01:002020-05-09T10:36:53.440+01:00Sadly, no - I have this book, and it's not in ...Sadly, no - I have this book, and it's not in there, but thanks for the suggestion, which I greatly appreciate.Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-40729218228242961862020-05-09T06:15:30.787+01:002020-05-09T06:15:30.787+01:00Do you mean this book...

I saw this photo in a book. However, I dismissed it at the time, thinking that it can't be possible (stupid me). I was and still am interested in all things cryptid/paranormal etc. That's what drew me to that particular book. It was not located in the so called 'weird' section of the library, instead it was in the geographic part, as in stories about US cities. I remember it being about a western state and a title somewhat like Strange things in ____ (state name). I'm thinking that this book is way out of print, that's why it can't be located. As far as when I saw this book, I can only say about 1980's up to 1995. I also have a time travel theory about why this picture no longer appears in books. And to set the record straight, no other picture that I have ever seen about Thunderbirds/pteradons influenced my mind about what I saw (that psych theory is totally false). You might also want to try looking in myth and legend periodicals about this subject. This has always been my favorite crytpo story (more the photo than the creature itself), but the fact that it centers around a photo in a newspaper in 1886 is a pretty good reason to doubt the whole thing. You almost never see photos in papers back then; most didn't have the technology for it. However, drawings and etchings were getting much more common by then, and papers often referred to the drawings as "photographs." This can lead to some confusion, as drawings based on photos were often called "drawings" as well, so sometimes you can read a trial transcript and not be sure if they're talking about a real photo or a drawing. - adam ( http://www.mysteriouschicagoblog.com ) Adam Selzerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16068653440362135301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-74899577139365545312014-12-18T05:18:44.161+00:002014-12-18T05:18:44.161+00:00I remember seeing this episode of Wild West Tech t...I remember seeing this episode of Wild West Tech too! I have this person's full name on file but they asked me to refer to them only by their initials here. Here is the email, which offers a very interesting potential new source for the thunderbird photo, if the photo in the programme concerned is indeed the real thunderbird photo (always assuming of course that there is one!):<br /><br />"Hi there! Reading your article on the thunderbird and thought I would pass along something of interest. I also remember seeing the thunderbird photo in a book, but in the early 80s. It was something I picked up from the local library and the pic was just like the one somebody described in your comments section. Since I have always followed this story, I was really interested in an old photo shown on an episode of Wild West Tech of all places, a show hosted by David Carradine before he died. This photo showed what looked like a pteradactyl, but it was held by KNEELING civil war soldiers, not nailed to a barn. I was fascinated because it looked real so I paid attention. The episode was not about pteradactyls - ha but the photo was stuck in strangely. I cant remember which episode now, sorry, but I did look for a photo credit at the end, there was none. I googled the show to try to see it online and learn more but it was unavailable. I would love to see that pic again and learn of its origin and possible authenticity. The soldiers might also be muddying the waters for others that saw it in contrast to the barn photo. If you look into it and find any info, please share!!!! Thanks, C.F."<br /><br />Has anyone seen this episode or knows where it can be viewed?
