He was on the wooden railing on the back steps of a building we were working on. One of the other labors there took a shovel and crushed him. The grasshopper had absolutely no fear of us whatsoever. I don't know about 3 ft in length but I do know about one that was one foot in length, and it was August so I don't know how much bigger he could have gotten.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-8146047278529648942021-02-22T23:23:57.896+00:002021-02-22T23:23:57.896+00:00‘Today I was delighted and extremely grateful to r...‘Today I was delighted and extremely grateful to receive from David Kranz... scans of the complete, original two-page Tomah Monitor-Herald giant grasshopper hoax report from 9 September 1937...’

Dr. Shuker believes that in all probability the image originated in a postcard, not with an image produced by the Tomah Monitor-Herald.

We agree but cannot be 100% certain. Consider, images printed in newspapers in the 1930s were halftones of something like 90 lines per inch (equivalent to a low resolution digital scan). In no wise could Coles Studio (the postcard company) reproduce a newspaper image without the dots making it look like Mr. Butts and his bug both have a bad case of acne.

But it still might be possible for Coles Studio to publish the postcard using a high quality image they obtained from the newspaper. In that case, how the newspaper cropped the image the printed doesn’t prove anything.

So why do we agree with Dr. Shuker anyway?
Photo retouching took quite a bit of skill in the pre-Photoshop days. Coles Studio was in the retouching business, the Tomah Monitor-Herald wasn’t.

Still, if ‘Mr. Butts’ appears in the other photos published in the newspaper,
we would have to reconsider. And thank you, Mr. Shuker, for the entertaining write-up.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-80753413706470948912018-02-28T14:09:03.437+00:002018-02-28T14:09:03.437+00:00I remember seeing that weekly world news magazine ...I remember seeing that weekly world news magazine as a kid standing in line at a caldor store.. crazy Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02627689630517749635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-20870550964938057262017-08-23T00:18:18.258+01:002017-08-23T00:18:18.258+01:00The reason why there is no image of the scanned do...The reason why there is no image of the scanned document is that it was supplied to me by the newspaper archive on the understanding that it was for research purposes only, and was not to be reproduced, so I haven't.Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3739684561063978507.post-4730074674815738632017-08-22T21:46:46.141+01:002017-08-22T21:46:46.141+01:00Is it possible to re-upload image of the original ...Is it possible to re-upload image of the original two-page Tomah Monitor-Herald?
